BESTDirect Trading Platform Makes Spread Trading More User Friendly

CHICAGO, September 2, 2010 – Trading futures spreads and options spreads is now just a click away on the PFGBEST BESTDirect® proprietary trading platforms. New electronic platform features make trading spreads easier for brokers as well as individual traders.

One window on BESTDirect facilitates trading in Exchange-Defined Spreads (EDS) for futures markets, and a separate window facilitates trading in User-Defined Spreads (UDS), which are for futures options. "At PFGBEST, we are focusing on options on futures, helping new and evolving traders to understand the characteristics that are unique to that market sector . Our goals are to help them be more comfortable with trading futures options and understand the value of options in a trading strategy," said Jeff Lewandowski, director of the PFGBEST Options Division.

For futures traders, CME Group defines and lists specific spreads covering futures contracts on interest rates, equities, forex, agricultural commodities, metals, and energy markets, known as Exchange-Defined Spreads (EDS). These include calendar, butterfly, condor, crush, and crack spreads.

For futures options trades, a different, yet simple–to–use window on the BESTDirect trading platform provides access to UDS. CME Group lists options spreads when market demand supports the creation of a new spread. To trade a spread that is not yet listed there, it takes just one click to get it. The spread types CME Group supports for futures options include most of the common ones: verticals, straddles, strangles, calendars, diagonals, butterflies, condors, iron condors, etc. Custom spreads can also be created with up to 40 legs! PFGBEST is adding these various spread types to the BESTDirect 8.0 platform.

Benefits of EDS and UDS for traders: Both EDS futures spreads and UDS futures options spreads offer a number of benefits to the trader. Often, the difference between bid and ask prices of spreads is much better than trading each of the outright legs individually. In addition,"leg risk" is eliminated entirely. With the entire spread done as a single trade, the trader is not exposed to adverse price moves while in the process of legging into the spread. A trader can get a greater size bid and offer on the spreads (generally). These tools – the EDS feature and the UDS feature on the BESTDirect platform – give retail users a greater insight into futures and options spread markets. The tools also help level the playing field between floor traders and online traders.

Mr. Lewandowski, in leading the PFGBEST Options Division, conducts an educational forum all day on weekdays called The Options Room. For a limited time, registration and participation in that chat room is free. Go to The Options Room is a live, interactive dialogue in which participants can discuss options terminology, how spreads work, trading strategies, a review of past trades, or other topics, such as how options work in terms of risk management for a diverse portfolio. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
