Paul J. Moran
Director of Managed Futures for PFGBEST
Paul J. Moran helps lead the continued growth and development of the managed futures business for the company with a concentration on developing superior institutional risk diversification opportunities within a structured portfolio.
Paul joined PFGBEST in 2007. Before that, he was director of foreign exchange for Effective Trading LLC. He created the company’s online foreign exchange presence, was responsible for all vendor contracts, and published a daily foreign newsletter (the Effective Report) which was widely distributed to the hedge fund and FCM client base.
He was a trading consultant and operations manager for his own trading business from 2000 to 2005, when he consulted for, and was awarded scholar status by, the Gerson Lehrman Group, an internationally recognized consultancy group. From 1997-2000 he was director of foreign exchange for the Chicago office of Rosenthal Collins Group. There, he set up and operated a profitable, in-house foreign exchange trading desk.
From 1994-1997, he was with The Chicago Corporation/ABN Amro in Chicago as a senior foreign exchange dealer and was a market maker for several large institutions, fund managers and CTAs.
From 1988-1994 he served as Chief Operations Officer of RCG/Quantum Financial Services In Taipei Taiwan and helped create what today is the largest FCM in Taiwan with full responsibility for building infrastructure, designing personnel operations, and developing and implementing all staff training. He was also responsible for wire room, proprietary trading and back office operations. He established market operations for clearing the CBOT, CME, COMEX, NYMEX, SIMEX and LME, and initiated inter-bank foreign exchange capabilities in spot and forward contracts with counterparty banks in Hong Kong, Singapore, and New York. He led the company’s EFP trading of currencies and metals, and also helped them branch into trading stock indices beginning with the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong. He liaised with the Taiwan SEC and the American Institute in Taiwan as the country started to develop its the derivatives industry and served on the finance committees of the American and the European Chambers of Commerce in Taiwan.
Paul started his career in banking, at the Bank of Ireland Republic from 1979 to 1986 and then moved to Chicago to gain trading experience with Rosenthal & Co. on the Mid-Am floor and in the wire room. He was a trader on the Rosenthal institutional desk and also a manager of the bond desk. He was recruited internally to help set up the first legalized U.S. commodity firm in Taiwan in 1988.
Paul went to Clongowes Wood College and the University of Galway in Ireland, where he studied history and was awarded a European Community scholarship in the study of computer systems analysis. He holds a Series 3 license, speaks Chinese, French and Gaelic.
